From Military Maneuvers to the Classroom ~ Jeremy Hickenbottom’s Unconventional Journey
“I thought, how hard can it be to keep a few middle schoolers busy for an hour?”
Jeremy Hickenbottom may look like your average social science teacher, but as with most things in life, there’s more than meets the eye. Behind his calm demeanor is a man whose story is marked by resilience, service, and an unwavering dedication to helping young people navigate life’s many lessons—both inside and outside the classroom. It’s not every day you meet someone who’s gone from operating heavy machinery and working on engineering teams to training soldiers in the Illinois National Guard, only to later find his true calling in teaching. But that’s exactly what Jeremy has done, and the Jasper County Schools community is all the better for it.
Jeremy’s story begins, as most do, with unexpected turns. He started his career in factory work and engineering, finding himself in environments that were quite literally built on precision and productivity. From managing production lines to training others in machine operation, Jeremy’s knack for leadership and organization became clear early on. But deep down, he always felt a pull toward something more meaningful.
That “something” turned out to be the Illinois National Guard. After enlisting, Jeremy’s world expanded beyond factory floors and machinery. His time in the Guard provided him with a host of valuable experiences, from traveling the U.S. to training new recruits and managing weapons qualifications. “It gave me a lot of perspective,” Jeremy reflects, his eyes lighting up as he talks about his time in service. “The discipline, the leadership skills—it was all something I didn’t realize I was capable of until I was there doing it.”
And it’s precisely those skills that he’s brought into the classroom. Jeremy’s approach to teaching isn’t just about lesson plans and textbooks—it’s about creating a space where students feel prepared for life. His military background means he runs a tight ship, but that doesn’t mean his classes are all about rigid discipline. Quite the opposite. His students describe him as approachable, funny, and someone who genuinely cares about their success.
“Jeremy’s one of those teachers you remember long after you leave school,” says a colleague. “He’s the kind of person who brings his life experience into the room in a way that really resonates with the kids.”
It’s not just the students who benefit from Jeremy’s unique background. His fellow teachers often find themselves relying on his organizational skills and leadership during school events and activities. Whether it’s organizing a field trip or helping out with extracurriculars, Jeremy is always one of the first to step up and lend a hand. “The military taught me that teamwork is everything,” he says. “No one can do it alone, and that’s just as true in education as it is in service.”
Of course, like any good story, Jeremy’s journey isn’t without its lighter moments. He recounts his early days in teaching with a laugh, recalling the first time he was tasked with running an after-school activity. “I thought, how hard can it be to keep a few middle schoolers busy for an hour?” he says, grinning. “Let’s just say I learned pretty quickly that it’s not about keeping them busy—it’s about keeping them engaged. Big difference!”
And engaged they are. Jeremy’s classes are known for being lively, interactive, and full of real-world applications. His students aren’t just learning social sciences—they’re learning how the lessons of history, government, and society apply to their own lives. “I try to show them that what we’re learning isn’t just about passing a test,” he explains. “It’s about understanding the world around them and how they can contribute to it.”
Jeremy’s transition from military life to teaching is a story of purpose and passion. While his career started in factories and training soldiers, it’s clear that he’s found his true calling in the classroom. The skills he developed in service—leadership, discipline, and an unwavering sense of duty—have made him an exceptional educator. But it’s his genuine care for his students and his community that truly sets him apart.
Now a vital part of the Jasper County Schools, Jeremy continues to serve, albeit in a different capacity. “It’s funny how life works,” he muses. “I spent so many years thinking I’d found my path in the Guard, but now I see that all of that experience was leading me here. To this community, to these kids. It’s a different kind of service, but it’s just as fulfilling.”
Jeremy Hickenbottom might not be wearing a uniform these days, but make no mistake: his commitment to service is as strong as ever. Whether he’s guiding students through a history lesson or lending his expertise to a school event, he’s always ready to give his best. And in the process, he’s helping to shape the future leaders of Jasper County—one lesson at a time.
